"In Process"
A new Writers' Room newsletter from BEING GORDY, A Situation Comedy
Happy Autumn, Friends.
The last few weeks I’ve had a few things on my mind. As October gets closer to ending, I find it hard to believe that almost a year ago I released the first issue of BEING GORDY, A Situation Comedy. That year went WAY too fast. If it’s true what they say — “the older you get the faster time moves” — then what’s the NEXT year going to bring? In six days I’m turning SIXTY. (I’m so screwed.)
How the hell did that happen??
Did I mention “I’m so screwed?”
DEAR GOD, HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN?!?
I digress …
It’s been a good year. It started by launching BeingGordy.com. And then I got the machine that is “tabling at a comic convention” up and running. I’m still learning on that one, but with each show I do I get a little better and better. More on that in a future newsletter not far away.
After releasing the pilot issue, I naturally thought that all of my time after would be about working on the second issue of BEING GORDY. I wasn’t expecting the tsunami wave of creativity that followed. A staple to my creative process is that I work organically. When an idea hits or inspiration comes, I have to shift to it and get it down on paper so I don’t lose it. So that’s been the case. As I’ve been sitting and producing issue two, I’ve had clear vision of what I am calling “Season One” of BEING GORDY, A Situation Comedy. When I began The Writers’ Room, I envisioned it as “a glimpse behind the wizard’s curtain” for those that have interest. Well … i’m delivering on that today. Here is your first peak at what’s up ahead for BEING GORDY. One note — all the art I am showing is unfinished, hence the title of this newsletter. All of these images are just the black and white inked linework what will become the cover to each issue.
Episode 2: “The Call Of My Ancestors”
Gordy takes a genealogy test and is told he’s 98% Native American. And in true Gordy fashion, havoc ensues. What happens when a Manhattan Jew throws away his Mathattan Jewness? Let’s find out. (Wait … is “jewness” a word? Eh, who cares.) This episode pays tribute to an old favorite sitcom of mine growing up — F-Troop.
Episode 3: “The Puppet Master”
Max hasn’t been around much lately as he and his wife plan their kid’s bar mitzvah. So Gordy does the same thing he did the last time this happened — he opens up a case and pulls out the Max Puppet. Paige is far from happy about this. this episode will pay homage to one of my two favorite situation comedies of all time — The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Episode 4: “Where The HELL Is This Boldly Going?”
Paramount Studios calls up Gordy and asks him to pitch a concept for a future Star Trek series. This is a story of what happens when you make the mistake of inviting a vampire into your home. (“The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?” That’s some BULLSHIT, yo.) This episode pays homage to … c’mon, do I REALLY need to say it at this point?
After episode 4, there will be two more episodes to round out Season One. More on those episodes at a later time. Oh, but wait, there’s more …
Linework, Volume 1
Alongside the second issue of BEING GORDY, I hope to release my first artist’s sketchbook of work both BG-related and not. One thing I noticed in the last few years is that whenever people look at my work, they like and mention the linework of my illustration. So the title of this piece became a no-brainer.
So there you have it, friends.
I am currently splitting my time between issue two and getting ready for my last outing of 2025 — Northeast Comic Con in Boxborough, Massachusetts on Black Friday Weekend.
I’ll be showing some new art and prints at this show which you’ll see beforehand in an upcoming Writers’ Room post. So, like I always say …
“Stay tuned!”
Gorde
